Essential oils in plants are natural products of the low molecular weight terpenoid type. Many of them have properties such as antioxidants and food preservatives.

Turmeric essential oil is perhaps the least known of the Curcuma longa L. products; however, it has traditionally been used for its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-aging, and other properties. Topical applications of this essential oil diluted in almond, coconut, or jojoba oil are used for hair loss and scalp conditions, including dandruff. It is also used to make facial masks and as an ingredient in creams for its antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, softening, and anti-aging properties.

Turmeric essential oil is extracted from the plant's rhizome. It contains a variety of sesquiterpenes with biological activities, including alpha-zingiberene, alpha-curcumene, beta-turmerone, ar-turmerone, caryophyllene, beta-bisabolene, beta-sesquifellandrene, cineol, zerumbone, and calebin derivatives. Tests in animal models have shown various activities, including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antinociceptive properties.
